You really think that's a Unique move? Hardly. GSMA are simply imitating others and are renowned for big PR splashes that lead to, well, nothing. Remember their big handset initiative? Or MoFilm? Or the mobile broadband chips? Conway will do and say anything to expand his celebrity photo ops. But the GSMA doesn't actually make or do anything other than sell their tradeshow space which is a front for the real negotiation platform for roaming agreements.

@ Dickster. Well you have said what I so slyly tried to avoid=). Thanks for that. It goes for a number of high level organizations which make their sales pitch by photographing amid such celebrities but practically end up doing nothing. I would not stop throwing my money on GSMA though; it is better than many I am analyzing.

This may be true of other GSMA initiatives and announcements (and bear in mind that as a trade body they need to get industry support, which isn't always as forthcoming in practice as it is in theory, when such announcements are made), but this particular initiative is actually led by the GSMA's development fund, and they do have a good record when it comes to addressing such issues. Think of the village phone, mobile money for the unbanked, the mAgri helplines, SMS campaigns etc...

@ Gaston. So do you think they'll live up to that record with this too? I am trying to follow this one closely but no line of action has been chalked as yet.

GSMAs development fund was a way to funnel Accenture and member cash to low ROI member projects, but certainly was done with low cost resources or low OHs. These guys only travel first class and never follow through. It's all SPIN.
